Knights Win Region for First Time in 20 years

The St. Mary’s varsity football team turned in its fifth straight victory on Nov. 4 with a 28-14 win over Lake Havasu Havasu High School in their last regional game of the season.

In addition to the victory, the game featured an impressive performance by senior wide receiver/safety PJ Lewis that included 101 rushing yards, three receptions (for 43 yards) and two touchdowns.

Senior quarterback David Galindo had 137 rushing yards with one rushing touchdown and a passing touchdown.

On the defensive end, Andrew Phelan and Ignacio Marquez had seven tackles each. Cornerback Elijah Garcia had one interception and caused two fumbles with cornerback Anthony Tristan and defensive lineman Ignacio Marquez both recovering one fumble each.

With the win the knights became the 4A Skyline Region champs for the first time in 20 years with an overall record of 7-2 (4-0 in region play). Anthony Tristan said, “It feels good to make history at SM and to know that we can come back and say that we did that.”

PJ Lewis’s outstanding performance was recognized by the Arizona Cardinals, who named him “High School Player of the Week”!

On Nov. 10, representatives of the Cardinals organization came to St. Mary’s for a lunchtime award presentation honoring PJ.
